Mobicomm Turning Physicians into Superdoctors
Doctors say a new health-monitoring system could revolutionize life for both healthcare professionals and patients

How great would it be if there was a superman out there, who could tune into our electrocardiographs and fly over in a second to take care of any sort of emergency? Physicians at Konkuk University Hospital (KUH) in Korea no longer envy Superman's supernatural power to run to a call for help in an instant. According to them, they are evolving superpowers of their own - thanks to modern IT. Representative Director Cha Joohak at Mobicomm Inc. said, "Just by asking patients to simply wear three electrode patches, immense amounts of data on a patient's body condition - including his body temperature, heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, pulse oximetry, emotional distress, and dozens more statistics, can be transferred in realtime to the attending doctors. Once a signal is sent, physicians can make an immediate reaction and contact the patient to provide first-aid treatment."

The Hygeian Ultimate Service (HUS) by Mobicomm Inc. helps doctors receive data, at a pace which is even quicker and more efficient than the efforts of any super heroes yet to be imagined in the world. Physicians do not have to use super-vision or other such superpowers before they set off to help. All the physicians need is an Ultra-Mobile PC (UMPC), a desktop, and a Smart Phone. Through HUS, hospital staffs can monitor a patient's physiological condition 24 hours a day and update physicians with every monitored detail of their patients. As Professor Song Meong-gun at Konkuk University Hospital says, the best doctor of all is a doctor that is available for patients at any given time. The victims in a poor medical system are patients whose lives could be at stake. How long do patients have to wait in line for a simple checkup? And how long will patients be waiting for important operations?

Many patients have already had enough. They have had to deal with enough hassles in status quo - from making appointments for having the further examinations. What patients in this millennium seek out is a doctor like Hygeia in Greek Mythology, who weighed the prevention of sickness and the continuation of good health over healing and treatment. And the only way to meet this demand is to pursue what Mobicomm is presenting to the u-healthcare centers: Hygeian Ultimate Service. By promoting a realtime monitoring service for 24 hours every day, patients who are insecure or who are questioning their physiological status are allowed to go through a series of simple steps in their own houses to send their electrocardiograms to the uhealthcare center. This service would increase the amount of surgery time available for specialized doctors who must divide their time equally between examining a certain number of patients and operating on others.

Cha explained, "We define Hygeian Ultimate Service as a remote-monitored and remote-controlled mobile healthcare service that is activated by patients' physiological status. HUS allows medical consulting by detecting a user's irregular physical conditions and sends the data to the Healthcare Center in realtime. The healthcare center then monitors and analyzes the data and selects the data to send on to the decision support system. At this point, the analysis and the data itself could be sent to anyone in the local doctor's clinic, the nearest hospital, or an ambulance. Physicians who either log on to servers or receive calls on their mobile devices are then given a consultation with the user via mobile video chat, regardless of their location and time."

According to Cha, HUS can not only be used to prevent chronic illness through daily monitoring and profiling, but can also be used for the patients who have the potential to experience a relapse of heart disease. What HUS can offer may apply to expanded areas. The service can decide if the user's environment, degrees of activities and pace of life are suitable for him. HUS can even determine whether the user is sleeping or awake, and it even allows employers to monitor their e m p l o y e e s , according to Cha. Cha himself has been suffering from diabetes for twelve years and has experienced the inconvenience of the traditional hospital system. He added, "My vision is to bring reform to our healthcare system, so patients living with chronic diseases can have immediate access to attending doctors."

The HUS is composed of five components, including: sensors for detecting vital signs, a device for acquiring and relaying data, a Smart Phone for transmitting data and receiving commands through WCDMA, a server for storing and processing data, and mobile or stationary equipment for monitoring and controlling. Cha continued, "The HUS we are presenting in the upcoming Expo Comm China 2008 (October 21st- 25th) is one that works with the WCDMA system. We are looking to launch our device abroad and hope to help establish the ubiquitous healthcare system infrastructure all over the world. The device itself may not be a core technology, but the establishment of a secure and stable system are the main factors behind competitiveness, and since Mobicomm has already constructed the system, we are taking it to the next level."

For the completion of the Hygeian Ultimate Service, a series of tests run at Konkuk University Hospital, and the commercialization of the service are expected by the end of 2008. Cha concluded, "The time has come when excellent data will make an excellent physician." If there was a god like Asclepius in Greek Mythology who healed, a goddess like Hygeia is also needed, to help maintain good health. Hospitals that are capable of both curing and preventing illness in the most effective way will eventually become the most competitive institutions in the world. Hygeian Ultimate Service could well play a pivotal role in a ubiquitous healthcare system by promoting the prevention of disease and providing the close monitoring of good health.
